DETENTION DAM DESIGN

Earthen detention dams are designed with the focus of safety and jurisdictional requirements. CFS works closely with both state and federal agencies to design and construct each detention dam based on their use and hazard classification. Earth embankments have the same ability to fail and cause damage to property or the loss of life. Our experts are designing principal spillway rehabilitations using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or high-density polyethylene (HPDE) and cast in place pipe (CIPP) liners. Our team designs modifications for auxiliary spillways, slope protection options, erosion control methods, compaction standards, and foundation and drawdown drains, and sand diaphragms. We work with watershed districts, communities, and private landowners to design and inspect earthen dams throughout Kansas and Missouri.

PROJECTS

Botteron Dam Design
DeSoto, Kansas

The Botteron dam is located just outside of DeSoto Kansas is a new dam built for recreation purposes. CFS was hired to design the dam, determine the hazard classification, and perform construction inspection services. The dam design included a primary spillway, auxiliary spillway and a drawdown structure. Also included in the design were seepage prevention drainage structures in the form of a foundation drain and sand diaphragm around the primary spillway pipe. The dam is a low hazard dam that is 39 feet tall and has a capacity of 78 acre-feet of storage at the auxiliary spillway. CFS assisted the owner with permitting through the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Water Resources, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and United States Army Corps of Engineers. A SWPPP was developed for this site and utilized during the construction phase.

Delaware Site A-35
Delaware Watershed Joint District No. 10, Kansas

CFS designed a full PVC pipe replacement and an additional foundation drain for the Delaware Watershed Joint District No. 10. The upstream and downstream embankments were both designed with slopes to meet regulations and allow continual maintenance. During construction all woody vegetation was taken down and all minimal repairs to the structure were completed as part of the rehabilitation. CFS also completed a breach analysis to determine whether any property would be inundated if the dam were to fail or over top the top of dam. 

Switzler Creek Site 3
Switzler Creek Watershed, Kansas

Switzlter Creek Watershed District No. 63 had CFS design the principal spillway and auxiliary spillway repairs for Site 3. The principal spillway was given CIPP and HDPE liner options, the auxiliary spillway was widened in order to meet hazard classification regulations. Our team worked with the Kansas Department of Agriculture in order to permit this structure for rehabilitation. CFS provides onsite construction inspection during all construction phases.
