Transportation

Our philosophy for improving transportation networks is based on reducing traffic congestion and the impact on the environment, repurposing systems to better serve communities, and reconstructing our community’s critical infrastructure to advance mobility and safety. CFS offers planning and design services in all aspects of transportation design including complete street and parkway projects, alternative intersections and traffic signals, and transit-oriented planning. We design “complete streets” that incorporate the interplay of vehicles with pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit, and we are regularly called on to provide traffic impact studies, transportation master plans, traffic calming solutions, improved crossing designs, and safety reports.

Services

Planning

CFS excels at building consensus by identifying the connections, overlaps, and compelling factors among planning issues. With a robust history in transportation planning and extensive experience collaborating with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), we are dedicated to improving transportation options, with a specific focus on Green and Complete Streets. CFS has successfully designed, engineered, and implemented dozens of blocks of high-performance, green, complete streets across Kansas and Missouri.

Roadway and Highway

CFS Engineers provides premium planning, design, and inspection for all aspects of highway projects. To achieve the best quality for a design project, our team plans and designs for horizontal and vertical alignments, topography constraints, clear zone grading and guardrail protection, traffic signals and roundabouts, signage, pavement markings, and access management. We expertly cover the variety of roadside details for highway projects including landscaping, stormwater flow, erosion control, lighting and fiber, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

Complete Streets

As American cities expand, balancing vehicular traffic with other transportation modes is increasingly vital. CFS excels in all facets of complete street projects, including road diets, multi-modal design, and transit-oriented development. We integrate diverse transportation forms using practical approaches to create functional, connected, and appealing street and road networks. Our goals are to achieve consensus on the preferred design, eliminate unsafe travel conditions, reduce travel times, and implement Intelligent Transportation Systems. Furthermore, we prioritize sustainability by designing shared-use paths, bikeways, and scalable transit stops to help reduce emissions.

Design-Build

The Design-Build concept is a highly efficient, cost-effective construction strategy that integrates and synchronizes design and construction timelines. This integrated approach offers numerous benefits, including enhanced owner participation, single-source accountability, improved communication, streamlined value engineering, faster project delivery (fast-tracking), and superior cost management from start to finish. By consolidating project responsibility within a single entity—the Design-Build team—this model ensures early control over price and schedule, significantly reducing the risk of unexpected issues or miscommunication during the construction phase. CFS Engineers has a strong, long-standing record of successfully completing Design-Build projects.

Traffic Engineering & Safety Analysis

CFS uses advanced data-collection technology to comprehensively evaluate traffic conditions, including speed, congestion, level of service, crashes, and projected land use. We analyze this data to provide communities with safe and effective transportation solutions. Our expertise often includes integrating vehicles with pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit to create "complete streets" designs. We also specialize in traffic impact studies, calming solutions, improved crossing designs, and lane capacity analysis.

CFS performs roadway safety assessments in both urban and rural settings with regards to crash data interpretation, crash trends, roadway safety audits, speed surveys, traffic calming solutions, sight distance evaluations, and access management requirements. Through our process of taking inventory of safety concerns and evidence of roadside damage, a list of possible crash countermeasures can then be determined to reduce the number of crashes. Based on a benefit-cost ratio, system-wide and site-specific recommendations can be evaluated to fit within near-term and future projects.
