JOB Summary
The Senior Field Technician performs advanced field inspections, testing, and documentation of construction materials and earthwork activities to verify compliance with project specifications, applicable building codes, and industry standards. This role serves as a senior‑level resource for project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients by providing highly accurate, timely, and professional testing and inspection services on commercial, industrial, institutional, and infrastructure projects.
Senior Technicians are expected to demonstrate strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and leadership in the field. This position requires a high level of independence, a strong commitment to safety and quality, and the ability to mentor junior technicians while maintaining exceptional customer service in a fast‑paced construction environment.
DUTIES / Responsibilities
Construction Materials Testing

Perform advanced field testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, grout, masonry, and other construction materials.

Conduct concrete sampling, slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and cylinder fabrication with expert proficiency.

Perform soil density testing using nuclear density gauges and other approved methods; troubleshoot testing challenges independently.

Conduct proof roll observations, moisture density testing, and evaluate subgrade and fill conditions.

Monitor placement and compaction of structural fill and provide recommendations when deficiencies are observed.

Document all testing activities accurately, thoroughly, and in accordance with senior‑level reporting expectations
Special Inspections

Perform special inspections in accordance with the International Building Code (IBC) with minimal oversight.

Inspect reinforcing steel placement, concrete placement operations, masonry construction, and other structural elements.

Observe drilled piers, foundations, retaining walls, slabs, grade beams, paving, and additional structural components.

Verify compliance with approved construction documents and communicate discrepancies promptly.

Serve as a knowledgeable resource for contractors and project teams regarding inspection requirements
Documentation

Prepare clear, accurate, and timely field reports with senior‑level detail and clarity.

Document construction activities with photographs and narrative descriptions.

Communicate deficiencies, non‑conforming work, and safety concerns to project managers proactively.

Maintain accurate daily records of testing and inspections.
-
Submit reports electronically each day and assist in improving reporting processes when needed.
Client Interaction

Represent the company professionally and confidently on project sites.

Coordinate effectively with contractors, owners, engineers, inspectors, and regulatory personnel.

Respond to field questions with technical expertise while maintaining impartiality and professionalism.

Build strong working relationships that support project success and client satisfaction.
Equipment
-
Operate and maintain testing equipment with a high level of care and technical understanding.

Perform routine calibration verification of field equipment and assist with troubleshooting.

Maintain company vehicle and field equipment in clean, safe, and reliable working condition.

Support training of junior technicians on proper equipment use and maintenance.
Required and/or Preferred Skills/Abilities

Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all testing and inspection activities.

Ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision and make sound technical judgments.

Effective communication skills with contractors, engineers, project managers, and junior staff.

Ability to interpret construction plans and specifications (required for senior‑level role).

Proficiency with electronic reporting systems and basic computer skills.

Ability to lift up to 60 pounds, work outdoors, and perform physical testing tasks.

Familiarity with construction materials testing procedures required; advanced knowledge preferred.

Ability to maintain professionalism, impartiality, and composure on job sites.

Valid driver’s license required.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

High school diploma required; additional technical training preferred.

Significant prior experience in construction materials testing or construction‑related work required.

ACI, ICC, or other industry certifications strongly preferred; willingness to obtain and maintain certifications required.

Experience mentoring or training junior technicians preferred
