Route 1 & Parvin Road

Kansas City, Missouri

ASCE Kansas City Section

2020 Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award

The project, a collaborative effort, was focused on the intersection of Missouri Route 1 (Prather Road) and Parvin Road in Clay County, Missouri. The 4-way stop condition intersection was reconfigured to a single-lane roundabout with a 130’ inscribed circle and truck aprons inside and outside of the circle to accommodate the WB-67 design vehicle. The City of Kansas City, Missouri, played a pivotal role as a partner in the project, providing a local match to the transportation funding. Both the KCMO Parks Department and the Public Works Department have property adjacent to the project and were involved in its planning and development.

Construction included clearing, removal of existing improvements, grading, installation of enclosed storm sewer systems, paving, installation of retaining walls, erosion control measures, street lighting, permanent signing, and pavement markings. The project included approximately 1,400 linear feet of roadway reconstruction, including a 5’ cut in one leg of the intersection, which required significant utility coordination and relocation.

MoDOT selected CFS to provide construction documents for the intersection improvements. CFS also provided a topographic and boundary survey for the project, the final roadway design, and the final PS&E package for construction letting. These services included geotechnical services, surveys, and utility coordination. CFS also provided displays/layouts and information for Right-of-Way acquisition, environmental studies, and permits, and a public meeting.
