Maplewoods parkway

Kansas City, Missouri

The Maplewoods Parkway Project, constructed by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, was a roadway improvement initiative. It spans approximately 1.8 miles from NE 96th Street to Shoal Creek Parkway, serving the Staley Farms area and the new Staley High School. The project extended north to North Cookingham Road, creating a vital north-south connection in this rapidly developing part of the city. CFS successfully completed the design, transforming the narrow, hilly two-lane road into a rolling parkway with variable-width medians, roundabouts, bike lanes, and trails. Diverse landscaping was also incorporated to enhance the area's overall aesthetics.

This project employs best management practices (BMPs) by grading the expansive landscaped medians to create rain gardens, which effectively clean and reduce stormwater runoff. The design strategically integrates sections of reverse crown pavement that direct water flow into the median rain gardens. Additionally, the project includes energy-dissipating features to reduce outlet velocities in the storm sewer system.

CFS's responsibilities encompassed concept development, preliminary design, public involvement and engagement, project coordination, right-of-way plans and acquisition assistance, transportation system criteria, environmental permitting services, storm drainage/sewer plans, water main plans, sanitary sewer specialty plans, final cross sections, and public involvement.
