Grant Avenue
Design/Build

Springfield, Missouri

This 3-mile, $22 million streetscape project is the City of Springfield's first completed design/build roadway initiative. It transformed a primary north/south connector, beginning at the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium and extending northward to encircle downtown along Grant Avenue, Main Street, College Street, and Campbell Avenue.

Notably, this design/build approach was the first of its kind in the nation, with the city dedicating substantial resources to "placemaking" elements throughout the corridor. The project converted the existing three-lane roadway into a two-lane facility with a 10-foot multi-use pathway and a 5-foot sidewalk.

Furthermore, the design included relocating all overhead utilities into a new underground duct bank system. A strong emphasis was placed on active transportation, prioritizing cyclists and pedestrians with raised crossings at all side streets and intersections. The design also incorporated a roundabout to enhance traffic management for both through traffic and traffic generated by Parkview High School, JFK Stadium, and Fassnight Park.

Improvements also integrated smart corridor technology, providing public Wi-Fi at multiple locations and offering mobility and travel time information for all modes of transportation.

CFS partnered with Radmacher Brothers Excavating, Inc., in a design-build collaboration to complete the project. CFS led all design components, including surveying, roadway design, and pedestrian amenities.
