Environmental Excellence Award for Nonmotorized and Multimodal Transportation
The Flint Hills Trail (FHT), a significant 118-mile rail trail in Kansas, extends from Osawatomie to Herington. Recognized as the longest rail trail in Kansas and the eighth-longest in the U.S., it was designated a Kansas State Park in 2018 and a National Recreational Trail. The FHT promotes active transportation, economic development, and outdoor recreation, providing safe routes for bicyclists, equestrians, and pedestrians. It connects six counties and several cities and is integral to local Bike/Ped Master Plans, contributing to 157 miles of trail connectivity, which will increase to 242 miles upon completion of the FHT and the Landon Trail. Furthermore, a portion of the FHT aligns with the Santa Fe National Historic Trail, with a collaborative effort underway to retrace 31 miles of this historic path. The FHT is also a segment of the American Discovery Trail.
