JOB Summary
The Field Technician performs field inspections, testing, and documentation of construction materials and earthwork activities to verify compliance with project specifications, applicable building codes, and industry standards. Technicians work closely with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients to provide accurate, timely, and professional testing and inspection services on commercial, industrial, institutional, and infrastructure projects.
This position requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, professionalism, and customer service while working in a fast‑paced construction environment.
DUTIES / Responsibilities
Construction Materials Testing
-
Perform field testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, grout, masonry, and other construction materials.

Conduct concrete sampling, slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and cylinder fabrication.

Perform soil density testing using nuclear density gauges and other approved methods.
-
Perform proof‑roll observations and moisture‑density testing.
-
Monitor placement and compaction of structural fill.
-
Document all testing activities accurately and thoroughly.
Special Inspections
-
Perform special inspections in accordance with the International Building Code (IBC).
-
Inspect reinforcing steel placement.
-
Observe concrete placement operations.
-
Observe masonry construction.
-
Observe drilled piers, foundations, retaining walls, slabs, grade beams, paving, and other structural elements.

Verify compliance with approved construction documents.

Documentation
-
Prepare clear, accurate, and timely field reports.

Document construction activities with photographs.
-
Communicate deficiencies and non‑conforming work to project managers.

Maintain accurate daily records of testing and inspections.

Submit reports electronically each day.
Client Interaction

Represent the company professionally on project sites.
-
Coordinate with contractors, owners, engineers, and inspectors.

Respond professionally to field questions while maintaining impartiality.
Equipment
-
Operate and maintain testing equipment.

Perform routine calibration verification of field equipment.

Maintain company vehicle and field equipment in clean, safe working condition.
Required and/or Preferred Skills/Abilities

Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision.

Effective communication skills with contractors, engineers, and project managers.

Ability to interpret construction plans and specifications (preferred).

Basic computer skills for electronic reporting.

Ability to lift up to 60 pounds (equipment, work outdoors, and perform physical testing tasks).

Familiarity with construction materials testing procedures (preferred).

Ability to maintain professionalism and impartiality on job sites.

Valid driver’s license required.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
-
High school diploma minimum.
-
Prior experience in construction materials testing or construction‑related work preferred but not required.
-
ACI, ICC, or other industry certifications preferred; willingness to obtain certifications required.

The Civil Engineer Field Technician supports engineers and project managers by performing fieldwork, collecting data, and assisting with the execution of civil engineering projects. This role bridges office and field operations, ensuring accurate information flows into design, construction, and documentation processes. The position requires a high attention to detail, comfort working outdoors, and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering and survey teams.
DUTIES / Responsibilities

Conduct on-site testing of materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates as needed

Document field conditions accurately and maintain organized records for engineering review.

Support the preparation of survey maps, drawings, and project documentation

Maintain field equipment, ensure proper calibration, and follow all safety protocols.

Communicate effectively with engineers, project managers, and survey teams to ensure accurate and timely information flow.

Travel to project sites and work in various terrains and weather conditions as required.
Required and/or Preferred Skills/Abilities

Ability to lift 50 lbs. and transfer concrete via wheel barrel on construction job sites

Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical documents

Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions and travel to job sites.

Valid driver’s license required.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
-
Associate degree in civil engineering technology, surveying, CAD drafting, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.

0–3 years of experience in civil engineering, surveying, or construction fieldwork.
