Briarcliff greenway trail
Kansas City, Missouri
APWA KC Metro Chapter Large City Transportation Under $5 Million
ACEC Engineering Excellence Award (EEA) Small Projects 2023
The heavily wooded Briarcliff Greenway section required a conservation-focused approach to protect the natural environment. Initially planned as a traditional trail, the project evolved into a network of paths and boardwalks to minimize disruption to local flora and fauna. The City selected the CFS/MegaKC team for its technical expertise. Construction was limited to a 15-foot-wide area to preserve native plants, trees, and wildflowers. A vegetation survey determined which plants to protect, and the community relocated some native wildflowers.
Due to limited access points, construction materials were brought in from both ends of the project. A concrete trail was built along steep downhill slopes, offering scenic views of the stream. Elevated boardwalks were constructed across major waterways to help maintain the surrounding green space. MegaKC's craftsmanship in building wooden boardwalks with composite decking allows visitors to experience the greenway among the trees. This project demonstrates how parkland can be accessible to all users and was a collaboration between MegaKC and CFS Engineers.
The Briarcliff Greenway Trail project underwent three design and bidding cycles to manage the budget, public expectations, and stakeholder needs. The chosen delivery method was a design-build project, a new approach for the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department.
