JOB Summary

The Civil Engineer Inspector supports project engineers and project managers by performing on‑site inspections, documenting construction activities, and verifying that work complies with plans, specifications, and applicable standards. This role plays a key part in ensuring quality, safety, and accuracy throughout the construction process. The position requires strong attention to detail, consistent documentation practices, and effective communication with contractors, engineers, and field personnel.

DUTIES / Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections of civil engineering projects, including roadway, utility, grading, drainage, and site development work.

  • Verify that construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications, codes, and project requirements.

  • Document daily construction progress, materials used, weather conditions, and contractor activities through detailed field reports.

  • Observe and record test results for materials such as concrete, asphalt, soils, and aggregates when required.

  • Communicate discrepancies, safety concerns, or non‑conforming work to the project engineer or project manager promptly.

  • Assist with measurement and verification of quantities for pay applications.

  • Maintain accurate records, photographs, and documentation for project files.

  • Coordinate with contractors, utility companies, and internal teams to support smooth project execution.

  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols while working on active construction sites.

  • Travel to project locations and work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.

  • Ability to work extended hours during peak construction season, particularly in the summer months, based on project needs.

Required and/or Preferred Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to travel to project locations up to 80% of the time, including regular regional travel to active construction sites.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. on construction job sites.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.

  • Strong observational skills and ability to identify deviations from plans or specifications.

  • Professional communication and collaboration with contractors and internal teams.

  • Problem‑solving skills and sound judgment in the field.

  • Commitment to safety and adherence to established protocols.

  • Familiarity with civil construction methods, materials, and inspection practices.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, and technical documents.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in field reporting.

  • Proficiency with basic computer applications; experience with inspection or reporting software is a plus.

  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and maintain organized documentation.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and navigate active construction sites.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • 1–3 years of experience in construction inspection, civil engineering fieldwork, or related construction activities.

  • Associate degree in civil engineering technology, construction management, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.

  • Preferred certifications such as:

    • ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician

    • Nuclear Gauge Safety/Operation Certification

    • KDOT or MoDOT inspection certifications (e.g., aggregates, asphalt, concrete)

    • Other relevant construction inspection or materials testing credentials
